When the Bully is the Boss

Image
"When the Bully is the Boss" by Benedict Carey is an interesting article, assessing workplace bullying from academicians' perspectives. From my practitioner, researcher, and survivor perspective, healthy yet tough bosses create thriving organizations where everyone feels safe with trust. Bullies exploit and hurt the vulnerable with attacks, by throwing them under the bus, or by hanging them out to dry. This is all done because the bully fears his or her incompetence is threatened, or will be exposed, by an unassuming, yet talented target. Thus, the most talented and gifted employees, instead of being celebrated and modeled, are targeted and attacked by bullies and often leave. Below please find a condensed letter sent from a mom whose son attended my recent talk on: A. Being Responsible with Healthy Decisions, B. Leading while Uplifting Thoughts and Conduct, and C. Building a Team with Trust and Safety. It was offered to Boy Scouts and their Adult Leaders to help troops Thrive with Healthy Leadership Practices. This 1.25 hour long program included engaging stories, activities, and tools highlighting these three topics. This program has been embraced by international audiences of all ages and professions. Feel free to contact me to discuss or arrange comparable engagements. Thanks for your consideration. "Good Morning Matt, I am writing to thank you for your presentation at the Boy Scout meeting yesterday. You seemed to reach my son. He came home from the meeting inspired and motivated and very excited to talk about what he had learned. He was so impressed with you, from your handshake to your stories at Brown to the group exercises.

McCarrick and Paterno lived as demigods into their 80's when light exposed their deceptive power and control, manifested in false appearances, and used to exploit and abuse children. True strength and toughness is characterized by leaders and organizations who protect and elevate their most vulnerable with self inspection and critique, selflessness, transparency, and honesty. It's time to assure healthy leaders are selected to help everyone thrive. Life is too short to tolerate bullies.
