Empower

Image
"What makes a leader great is not the fact that she (or he) has all the answers, but the ability to inspire and empower us to find the answers." - Abhijit Banerjee #leadersarentbullies #stepup #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #DignityAtWorkAct Bad corporate executives and officials try to cultivate in employees a sense of financial dependence to sabotage self-efficacy. Deviant officials and managers attempt to manipulate worker insecurities and immature needs for approval affiliation.

Decency

Image
"When the norm is decency, other virtues can thrive: integrity, honesty, compassion, kindness, and trust." - Raja Krishnamoorthi "The only thing worse than a coach or CEO who doesn't know his craft is one who pretends. People can spot a phony every time." - Jimmy Johnson "Wretched are those who are vindictive and spiteful." - Pope Francis #leadersarentbullies #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #stepup #DignityAtWorkAct

Build vs. knock down

Image
“People who repeatedly attack your confidence and self-esteem are quite aware of your potential, even if you are not.” - Wayne Gerard Trotman #leadersarentbullies #stepup #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #DignityAtWorkAct Successful leaders, as opposed to bullies, seek to expose the truth. They solve problems, influence people in constructive and positive ways, and achieve growth-perpetuating, healthy, bottom line outcomes.

Surround with Strength

Image
"The best thing to do when you find yourself in a hurting or vulnerable place is to surround yourself with the strongest, finest, most positive people you know." - Kristin Armstrong #leadersarentbullies #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #stepup #DignityAtWorkAct

Choose a Response

Image
Bullies expect blind obedience, for people to laugh at their jokes (indecent or not), and for their so-called minions to kowtow, comply, and fawn. Don’t feign approval. Be authentic.  Demand decency and respect. "Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom." - Viktor E. Frankl #leadersarentbullies #stepup #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #DignityAtWorkAct

Respect

Image
"One of the most sincere forms of respect is actually listening to what another has to say." - Bryant H. McGill "There is no respect for others without humility in one's self." - Henri Frederic Amiel #leadersarentbullies #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #stepup #DignityAtWorkAct

Benevolence

Image
Leaders should be measured and held accountable for outcome vitality in three critical dimensions: 1. an organization’s bottom-line results, 2. adherence to #ethical and legal processes, and 3. the demonstration of healthy and respectful relationships. "Treating employees benevolently shouldn't be viewed as an added cost that cuts into profits, but as a powerful energizer that can grow the enterprise into something far greater than one leader could envision." - Harold Schultz #leadersarentbullies #stepup #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #DignityAtWorkAct

Authenticity

Image
v "Authenticity means erasing the gap between what you firmly believe inside and what you reveal to the outside world." - Adam Grant #leadersarentbullies #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #stepup #DignityAtWorkAct

Collaborate

Image
"Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." – Helen Keller #leadersarentbullies #stepup #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #DignityAtWorkAct Predatory bullying is more common  in countries, like the United States, where aggressive cultures flourish.  Perceived and actual power disparities between reporting relationships in respective organizations tend to create separation, discord, and an "us vs. them" mentality.

Empathize

Image
"Empathy, humanity and support for each other is more important than revenue, than growth." - Eric Yuan #leadersarentbullies #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #stepup #DignityAtWorkAct

Facts

Image
Objective bullying evidence, like emails, photos, and recordings, is critical to prove workplace abuse.  Having many witnesses can also help support abuse in the workplace claims.  #LeadersArentBullies "Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence." - John Adams #healthyworkplaces #stepup #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #DignityAtWorkAct

Schoolyard and Workplace Bullying

Image
"Bullying can be defined as persistent and ongoing acts of incivility directed toward an individual or group. This definition works with both workplace and school bullying. Bullies harass others based on their own issues related to self-esteem and inadequacy." - Crisis Prevention Institute #leadersarentbullies #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #stepup #DignityAtWorkAct

Document and Record

Image
The worst bullying manager I’ve known conducted his assaults in private, sans witnesses. This was intentional.  In one party consent states, the law allows targets to record conversations without the other party's permission or knowledge. "Cowards are cruel, but the brave love mercy and delight to save." - John Gay "The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is." - Winston Churchill #leadersarentbullies #stepup #healthyworkplace #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #DignityAtWorkAct

Appreciate and Recognize

Image
"People want to know they matter, and they want to be treated as people. That’s the new talent contract." - Pamela Stroko #leadersarentbullies #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #stepup #DignityAtWorkAct

Introducing #UAWB2021 Conference speaker... Matt Paknis, Matt will be talking about factors that distinguish Healthy Workplaces and Successful Leaders. As a senior management consultant, Matt helps global clients thrive with healthy #leadership practices and #teamwork . These factors helped him transcend childhood trauma and the illness and death of his mother. In 2017, Matt wrote a book on #WorkplaceBullying and abuse, based on his experiences in helping organisations identify, address, prevent, and overcome abusive behaviours. The book, Successful Leaders Aren’t Bullies, is currently sold out in most distribution channels with printing on hold while related

Gather Bullying Evidence

Image
Victims and targets who make bullying claims without evidence are often stigmatized as troublemakers or whistleblowers, despite their admirable efforts to expose and stop workplace bullying. #LeadersArentBullies "The deepest sin against the human mind is to believe things without evidence." -  Aldous Huxley "All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident." - Arthur Schopenhauer #healthyworkplaces #stepup #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #DignityAtWorkAct

Transparency

Image
"A lack of transparency results in distrust and a deep sense of insecurity." ,- Dalai Lama "Insecure people only eclipse your sun because they're jealous of your daylight and tired of their dark, starless nights." - Shannon L. Alder #leadersarentbullies #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #stepup #DignityAtWorkAct

Support Targets and Victims

Image
Predatory bullying, in other words all bullying, refers to cases where a victim has done nothing to provoke or to explain the predator's abusive behaviors. #LeadersArentBullies #supportvictims "Violence (abuse) is the last refuge of the incompetent." - Isaac Asimov #leadersarentbullies #stepup #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #DignityAtWorkAct

The Rule of Law

Image
"Revenge and retaliation always perpetuate the cycle of anger, fear and violence." - Coretta Scott King "Retaliation is related to nature and instinct, not to law. Law, by definition, cannot obey the same rules as nature." - Albert Camus #leadersarentbullies #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #stepup #DignityAtWorkAct

Stand Together

Image
Bullying at work includes exposure to repeated and enduring negative acts in the workplace when an imbalance in formal or informal power exists between the involved parties.  #workplaceculture “It’s important to stand up to all forms of bullying, and it’s even more important for those who are around you to be just as courageous and stand with you!” – Normani Kordei #leadersarentbullies #stepup #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct   #DignityAtWorkAct

Strong and Secure

Image
"A leader who is too controlling is revealing more insecurity and a lack of leadership." - Mark Goulston #leadersarentbullies #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #stepup #DignityAtWorkAct

Respectful and Nonabusive

Image
"Child abuse casts a shadow the length of a lifetime." - Herbert Ward "Self-centeredness is part of being abusive and disrespectful. The opposite is selflessness. Selflessness is a part of being non-abusive and respectful."  - Jennie Dibartolomeo #leadersarentbullies #stepup #healthyworkplaces #DignityAtWorkAct #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct Dan Olweus, defines schoolyard bullying as: “...as aggressive behavior or intentional harm doing by peers that is carried out repeatedly and involves an imbalance of power, either actual or perceived, between the victim and the bully.”

Characteristics of Mental Health

Image
Mental health is more than just the absence of mental illness. It includes how you feel about yourself and how you adjust to life events. However, the National Mental Health Association cites 10 characteristics of people who are mentally healthy. They feel good about themselves. They do not become overwhelmed by emotions, such as fear, anger, love, jealousy, guilt, or anxiety. They have lasting and satisfying personal relationships. They feel comfortable with other people. They can laugh at themselves and with others. They have respect for themselves and for others even if there are differences. They are able to accept life’s disappointments. They can meet life’s demands and handle their problems when they arise. They make their own decisions. They shape their environment whenever possible and adjust to it when necessary.

Substance

Image
"Things are not always as they seem; the first appearance deceives many." - Phaedrus #leadersarentbullies #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #stepup #DignityAtWorkAct

Accountability and Consequence

Image
"Only criminals and bloodsuckers reward bad behavior." - Ted Nugent "One goal of law - as we learn in law school from the first day of contracts - is to deter bad behavior." - Marvin Ammori #healthyworkplaces #stepup #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #DignityAtWorkAct

Transparency

Image
"Transparency increases credibility and accountability." - Park Won-soon "Trust brings a higher level of communication and a higher level of commitment and accountability." - Bruce Arians #leadersarentbullies #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #stepup #DignityAtWorkAct

Fight Corruption

Image
In a bullying environment, complicit, colluding friendships with an executive can trump health, safety, and productivity. #LeadersArentBullies #healthyworkplaces "The accomplice to the crime of corruption is frequently our own indifference." - Bess Myerson "Corruption is like a ball of snow, once it's set a rolling it must increase." - Charles Caleb Colton #stepup #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #DignityAtWorkAct

Build Others Up

Image
“Isn’t it kind of silly to think that tearing someone else down builds you up?” - Sean Covey “People who repeatedly attack your confidence and self-esteem are quite aware of your potential, even if you are not.” - Wayne Gerard Trotman #leadersarentbullies #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #stepup #DignityAtWorkAct

Objective Facts

Image
Bullies hate to be objective. It requires honesty and truth, unwelcome traits in their distorted power-control universes. #LeadersArentBullies “Narcissism (bullying) is voluntary blindness, an agreement not to look beneath the surface.” — Sam Keen #healthyworkplaces #stepup #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #DignityAtWorkAct

Competent and Confident

Image
"There are three things in the world that deserve no mercy, hypocrisy, fraud, and tyranny," (all bullying traits). - Frederick William Robertson #leadersarentbullies #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #stepup #DignityAtWorkAct

Transparency

Image
"Appearances are often deceiving." - Aesop #leadersarentbullies #stepup #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #DignityAtWorkAct Workplace bullies rely on warped opinions and superficial veneers to control others. Healthy workers in thriving workplaces don’t tolerate bearded cruelty. Rational adults make factual observations to foster transparency, accountability, safety, and trust.

Authentic

Image
"A tyrant is but like a king upon a stage, a (person) in a vizor, and acting the part of a king in a play: (and) not really a king." - John Milton #leadersarentbullies #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #stepup #DignityAtWorkAct

Become Great

Image
"Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great." – Mark Twain #leadersarentbullies #stepup #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #DignityAtWorkAct Good leaders and their organizations can buck the destructive workplace bullying trend by managing successful outcomes  with shared accountability, goals, and healthy relationships.

Be Human

Image
“And we need to know what it is to be human if we are to avoid becoming narcissists (bullies).” - Alexander Lowen #leadersarentbullies #healthyworkplaces #leaderselevatethoughtandconduct #stepup #DignityAtWorkAct
